Healthy Arguing

In the article posted on Mr. King's blog, arguing is considered sometimes to be healthy for a relationship. While this may be true for some situations, like setting up personal boundaries between two people, it can be very destructive also. For example, say two friends are arguing about political views. What one friend says may offend the other to the point where the friendship is ended. This is a destructive effect because it was not only unhealthy for the relationship, it ended it. Therefore there is no longer a relationship for the argument to positively effect.

My Bondage and My Freedom - Fredrick Douglass

In the exerpt from "My Bondage and My Freedom", Douglass talked about his Mistress from his childhood, and how he was able to gain some form of education, at first through her, and then later from white children. His insatiable apetite for knowledge caused him to learn how to read and write behind his master's back. His master did not want him to gain an education because he believed that, should a slave learn to read, they would no longer be fit to be a slave. His theory was proven correct, as the more Douglass learned, the more he longed for his freedom.

Through the education he had obtained, Douglass had gained a sense of independence unfit for a slave. This goes to show that knowledge is power, for, because of this education, Douglass realized that he, or anyone else for that matter, did not deserve to be enslaved. Therefore, he fought for his freedom with his words, and gained quite a following. He was easily one of the strongest Anti-Slavery advocates in his time. however, none of what he did would have even been possible if he had never been educated, and he would have been just another slave in the fields without that education he valued so much.
